Oasis Coyoacán

Oasis Coyoacán

Heart of the south, source of emotions.

Oasis is a commercial project awarded at the National Architecture Biennale. It is grounded by the concern to create commercial spaces with a different approach through the quality of experience.

Taking into consideration Mexico City’s mild weather, this commercial center becomes a new public plaza, a comfortable, exterior meeting point, going beyond the strict function of a commercial plaza by creating a recreational space. Its spacious nature aims to create new interaction parameters and to improve the user’s quality of life in a broader sense.

The architecture was designed to stimulate economic activity and to act according to its strategic vision: people that visit the plaza will shop there too.

The spatial organization is very clear; a monumental pedestrian entrance with a bicycle parking and a porte-cochère for the vehicles, composed of wide garden areas and fountains, followed by the main commercial axis. A straight area framed by various spaces and gardens ends in a lake and a public plaza. The 3000m2 lake along with its natural stone cliff adds the visual finishing touch.

Inside the lake, three water walls and 50 choreographed water jets create a water spectacle of light and music for its visitors.

The public plaza is located on the western side before the lake. Wide and open, it is designed for multiple activities; concerts, readings, artistic events or simply to enjoy. The greatest challenge was to establish the nature and the identity of the commercial center on the client’s condition that 100% of the frontal sides were shop windows and that no visual obstacles were displayed (including vertical plants). The canvas upon which we worked consisted on ceilings and floors. The floor was conceived as a continuous garden.
